What is the Australian Vietnamese Scholarship Fund?
The Australian Vietnamese Scholarship Fund is a charitable/philanthropic fund set up by the charitable institution called AVEPA (Australia-Vietnam Education Promotion Association). Its objective is to seek funding to provide scholarships for brightest Australian students of Vietnamese background to study in Australian universities.
Why is the Australian Vietnamese Scholarship Fund established?
In 2015 the Vietnamese community in Australia will celebrate its 40th anniversary of establishment and development in its adopted country. Since then every Vietnamese family has moved from the most difficult times to the current sustainable life. The Vietnamese community has contributed significantly to Australia’s social and economic development. Many of their children are now engineers, doctors, lawyers, and other fields, or own their own business. However there are not yet big businesses, leading experts in different fields or brilliant politicians. In short, the social and economic development among the Vietnamese community has made some progress but it has not yet met its intellectual and cultural potential.
To improve its profile in the forthcoming decades, the Australian Vietnamese Scholarship Fund is therefore established to canvass social forces, big hearts and visionary minds to incubate young generations of leaders in all aspects of life from science and technology, economics and finance, international development, to politics, culture, education, health, law and other fields.
Who are founders of AVEPA and the Australian Vietnamese Scholarship Fund and when?
Founders consist of a number of Australians, including Australian of Vietnamese origin. They are leading personalities in higher education, health, philanthropy and religion.
The not-for-profit AVEPA was established in late 2011 and from 5 November 2013 its Australian Vietnamese Scholarship Fund was endorsed by the tax authority as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR). This is very important for AVEPA because donations of over 2 dollars can claim for tax deductibility.
How many types of scholarships?
Currently there are two types of scholarships: scholarship for undergraduate studies (Bachelor degree) and scholarship for postgraduate research consisting of Master by research and PhD.
Who can lodge the application?
Only citizens and permanent residents of Australia of Vietnamese origin to apply. Thus, only the Australians of Vietnamese origin living all over Australia may apply subject to meeting further criteria set up the Scholarship Selection Committee.
Can students of Vietnamese citizenship who plan to study in Australian universities apply for this scholarship?
No. The Australian Vietnamese Scholarship Fund owned by AVEPA is reserved for Australian students of Vietnamese origin. Students of Vietnamese citizenship who study in Australia, if they desire, can send their scholarship applications to similar scholarships organisations from Vietnam.
Who are the members of the Scholarship Selection Committee?
The Scholarship Selection Committee will consist of eminent university professors, leading scientists and high profile community members.
When does the Australian Vietnamese Scholarship Fund commence to offer the first scholarship batch?
When sufficient funding is available. AVEPA hopes to provide a small number of scholarships on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnamese community in Australia (early 2015). We will have official announcements in Vietnamese on relevant media including TV and radios.
