Rationale
The large Vietnamese community in Australia is still not well integrated into their Australian society. The Australian community can benefit to a much greater extent from their more effective participation. It is the young people that can contribute to a more cooperative and cohesive society. The students supported by the AVEPA program will become effective contributors to, and leaders of our communities in the future.
Objectives
AVEPA – Australian Vietnamese Scholarship Fund of Australia pursue a visionary roadmap which is to promote social cultural integration among Australia and Vietnam. The objective of the Australia-Vietnam Education Promotion Association (AVEPA) is to develop highly educated and effective people, who can contribute to the development of Australia through providing scholarships for the education of talented Vietnamese background Australian students and scholars.
AVEPA identifies outstanding Australian students of Vietnamese parentage completing their secondary education and who wish to proceed to a university degree program. They must have a very high ATAR score and demonstrate that they have the potential and commitment to become leaders in our community. They are awarded a once off Scholarship on the condition that they participate in a leadership mentoring program conducted by AVEPA. The aim is to achieve more positive cultural integration of Victoria's Vietnamese community.
The primary outcome will be a more committed and integrated society resulting from the enhanced interaction and cooperation between our communities of diverse backgrounds, greatly facilitating the integration of our Vietnamese community into the Victorian community.
Types of Scholarships
Since 2014, AVEPA has provided numerous scholarships for Australian students with a Vietnamese family background for undergraduate study. The selection of Australian students with Vietnamese backgrounds for undergraduate study scholarships in Australian higher education institutions will be made from among those nominated to the AVEPA Selection Committee, and recommended to the Board of Directors for award on the basis of academic excellence and leadership potential, in accordance with policies adopted by AVEPA.
AVEPA has been operating since 2017, and through its contact with these students and through the regular functioning of the mentoring program, it is apparent that, with the expertise and commitment of these students, our community will benefit from their professionalism, dedication, skills and knowledge. The number of brilliant students applying for AVEPA scholarships in previous years has greatly exceeded the number of scholarships that we could award. Our direct contact with the students during their courses assures that our desired outcomes will be realised.
